Walk & Lunch: Kotor, Kotor MunicipalityAn uphill hike that will earn you stunning views over the fjord-like Bay of Kotor
The Bay of Kotor is the glittering cobalt jewel at the heart of one of Montenegro’s most beautiful cities. There’s no shame in simply sitting and admiring it while drinking cocktails at one of the many bars and restaurants on the waterfront. Yet for real wow-factor, you should go and climb the medieval fortifications, which will take you 260m above sea level and give you giddying views over the fjord and the soaring hills that surround it. On a hot day, it might take a family an hour and a half to climb up and down the structure that dates from the 14th century, and incorporates Illyrian, Byzantine, Venetian and Austrian influences. Arm yourself with decent shoes and plenty of water. The sense of achievement is almost as exhilarating as the views. And all that effort means you can treat yourself to lunch at Hotel Hippocampus afterwards.
