Walk & Lunch: Hastings, East SussexHastings highlights – a whistle-stop tour
Get your bearings at the restored pier (winner of the 2017 RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture); grab a coffee from the pier’s Billycan stall and admire the views of town, sea and cliffs. Then head east along the promenade, past the shingle beach and the amusements, to the black-painted net huts on the Stade. Admire the beach-based fishing fleet, and check out the Jerwood Gallery (20th -century British art), and the atmospheric Fishermen’s Museum. Have lunch at award-winning The Crown, the charismatic Dragon Bar or the old-school FILO (First in Last Out) pub, or just savour a bag of chips from the Blue Dolphin. Once fortified, take the East Hill Lift (one of two funiculars) to the clifftop Country Park. Walk for as long as you like – the coast path goes all the way to Fairlight – or head back down to the Old Town to investigate the independent shops on George Street and the High Street, such as Warp & Weft.
