Road Trip: Gard, FranceAn easy-does-it day trip with lunch in the Gardon gorge
Take the D981 out of Uzès, following the signs to Avignon, for the 20-minute drive to Pont du Gard. The picturesque road takes you through the vineyards and fruit-growing estates of the Pays d’Uzès. The right-hand turn for Pont du Gard is well-signposted. Park and walk to the visitors’ centre where you buy entry tickets. After your visit, take the same road back until you see the left-hand turn for Collias. As you come into the village turn left at the T-junction (signposted Nîmes) and immediately on your right is a car park. From here, walk down the steps to the river for lunch at L’Enclos. Then reverse the drive to get back to the Uzès road. Other ancient villages in the area worthy of a detour are Castillon-du-Gard and Saint-Maximin, both utterly charming and eminently photographable.
